McGruff Program

The McGruff program has been in Worthington for almost 10 years.  As you drive down the streets of Worthington you may notice yellow McGruff signs displayed on the houses.  This sign is intended to let children know the house is a place to run to if they are in need of assistance.  The City of Worthington also has McGruff trucks.  These are City trucks that also carry the McGruff logo on them.  The Worthington City trucks also have direct contact with the Worthington Police Department via radio.

Children are taught a special wave to use in case they are in trouble and see one of the McGruff trucks.  McGruff is also responsible for several other programs throughout the community.  Just recently a McGruff safety camp was conducted.  This camp was for fourth grade students and gave them the opportunity to learn about safety in a hands on manner.  there were several different safety vehicles for the kids to look at ranging from a fire truck to a tractor and everything in between.  The McGruff program also allows for officers to go into the classroom and talk about several different safety issues.

If you are interested in making your home a McGruff house please stop at the Worthington Law Enforcement Center and ask for an application.  Upon completion of the application, we conduct a background check.  Upon passing the check you will be issued a sign to post.

The Worthington Police Department is a participant in the McGruff House program.  The McGruff program is where certain houses in the community display the McGruff poster.  The homes that display this poster have committed themselves to provide a safe place for young people to run for help if the need arises.

If you wish to be considered as a McGruff Safe House, please contact the Worthington Police Department at 507-372-2136.  For more information on the McGruff program please visit the McGruff website at www.mcgruff.org and the National Crime Prevention Council at  www.ncpc.org.
